KUCHING: The Sarawak Amateur Radio Emergency Service (Sares) will join forces with the Sarawak Disaster Relief Committee to render radio communications support, in the event of flood in the state.
The 60-member Sares is part of the committee under the chairmanship of Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu.
It will place a communications centre in the state operations room and coordinate with the committee to receive and relay vital reports on villages and remote locations affected by flood, or request assistance via the radio team.
Sares president Captain Zainuddin Tan Sri Hamdan Sirat said the service which currently assisted and rendered radio communication support to government agencies, would now play an important role in radio communications in disaster or flood situation.
He said it also provided communications support at the four-day International Major Incident Response Exercise Competition (iMIREX) held at the Sarawak Cultural Village in Santubiong, beginning Dec 1.
Meanwhile, Sares secretary Morgan Gregory said it was formed and approved by the Registrar of Societies (ROS) on Oct 22 last year, adding it was currently 60-man strong.
He said Sares was now open for membership, adding that members must be aged 18 and above, and interested in radio communications before they undergo training. Those interested to become members can contact Zainuddin at 013-3500279 or Morgan at 016-8575678. – Bernama
